HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY IN
NIGERIA.
INTRODUCTION
In
this discussion the historical development of education technology in Nigeria,
it is natural to narrate how the discipline emerged into the education practice
in the country. The development of educational technology in Nigeria. The
disciple emerged into the educational practice in the country before the
incoming of missionary. In the north and southern part of Nigeria. The society
has been educating its citizen before the establishment of school system in
what we regard as informal education.
PRE-MISSIONARY ERA
As
suggested by the name this referred to the period before the arrival of the
missionary and the introduction of Qur’anic school in Nigeria. For the clear
understanding this would recall that the Nigerian society had been educating
its citizens before the establishment of the school system in the form of
informal education. During the day effort were made by the adult member of the
society, family member e.t.c they provide opportunities in order to sends their
newly born child to grow up and acquire the fundamental basic and necessary
knowledge skills and education, they will make he/her to be responsive and
regard him in the society and adult who would be taken good care of him/her
self and contribute positively toward the development in isolation and so
peer-group and teamwork were highly encouraged.
The curriculum though not written was
quite extensive an in terms of treatment intensive. The curriculum covers
modern day subject like history, geography, social studies, religious
knowledge, sciences, fine art craft e.t.c acquisition of knowledge skill and
the right types of behavior were the central focus of the curriculum.
POST MISSIONARY ERA
The
incoming of the missionaries to the southern and northern part of Nigeria
marked a new wind shed in the historical development of educational technology
in Nigeria. The Christian missionaries came and realize that the only way to
achieve their goal or aims and objective of evangelism mission is establishing
school to enable them achieve the desire goal. In 1842 the first school was
established in Badagry Lagos, and subsequently prominent mission state establishing
school. In the north however Qur’anic school were established in terms of
introduction of aspect of technology, the western education seems to supports
its integration into the curriculum then the Islamic education, it should be
mentioned that the establishment of teacher training college that prepared teachers for
the primary school system in particular St. Andrew teacher training college Oyo
and Wisley College Ibadan among others were a great sources of advancement for
the entrenchment of educational technology
GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR EDUCATION
TECHNOLOGY
On
its own part, I addition towards the support that government and contribution in
supporting the development of education technology, Government play a
significant role. It development and production of education radio and
television programs for primary and secondary and also teachers training, In
colleges of education government give attention in building of technical college
and as well as teacher colleges, also, the development and production of in
structural teaching aids for use in school using local materials, the creation
of ICT centers in most science and technical colleges in various most of the
colleges, training of specialist in the field of educational broadcasting e.g
Radio, Television, audio visual aids, organizing of seminal conference for
teachers and teachers trainees on the application of educational technology to
class teaching, the provision of consulting service to the federal and state
government in the field of the broadcast media, audio-visual aids and in
structural system technology.
In some years back the National open
university of Nigeria (NOUN) was established. The function of this centre is as
follows:
1. Production
and transmission of in structural programs in radio and learning package,
models, audio visual in structural material e.g over head projector, charts and
other non book instruction support materials for various subject that can serve
the learning environment.
CONTRIBUTION OF FOREIGN INVENTORS FOR THE
DEVELOPMENT OF EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY
The
history of educational technology will not be concluded without making a
comment of the contribution and support from the international organization, thus
they contribute a lot in making sure that this project went smoothly and
benefited by the beneficiaries.
The contribution of foreign bodies and
organization towards the advancement of the cause of educational technology in
the country are given attention. The most prominent body among these foreign
bodies are United Nations educational scientific and cultural organizations.
(UNESCO) the centre for educational development overseas (CEDO) as well as the
British council specifically the ford foundation and the British broadcasting
corporation assisted the old Nigerian broadcasting corporation now federal
radio corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) another aspect of education technology they
enjoyed it entrenchment into the teacher educational curriculum in Nigeria is
micro-teaching, with the assistance receive from the Unisco and UNDP in term of
fund, equipment and persons assistance e.g Alaun Ikoku college of education Owerri

teaching in Nigeria. In 1962 the University of Ibadan was be able to establish
it own audiovisual aid unit of its institute of education. The unit benefited

Today
the development of educational technology in Nigeria has assumed a multi
dimensional form as the federal and state governments are making effort to
integrate technology into the educational system. The institutions of high
learning as well as other levels of education are seriously committed to the
same purpose through the various agencies, e.g Universal Basic Education
Commission (UBEC) as well as the Nigeria educational research and development
council, (NERDC) National Universities Commission (NUC) National Commission for
College of Education (NCCE) e.t.c
